Job Overview: We are seeking a creative, exceptional educator with a pioneering spirit to serve as our lead middle school teacher for the 2024-25 school year and beyond.

This position will begin in the summer of 2024 and will be leading a multi-age classroom of 7th and 8th graders. The lead teacher should be interested in playing an integral role in growing Mountain Sun Community School’s middle school program. The curriculum is holistic and experiential; honors, attends to, and nurtures this age and stage of adolescence; and utilizes the natural environment and our community setting. Smaller class sizes allow for dynamic, project-based, and creative teaching. The lead teacher should have expertise in several of the primary middle school subject areas and be excited to lead multi-day excursions into outdoor and urban environments.

Candidate Experience/Interest: The lead teacher must share our desire to advance the school’s values and mission and be able to incorporate those philosophies into curricular activities. The ideal applicant will be a creative, talented and dedicated teacher, a team player, and possess excellent classroom management and communication skills. Candidates should have a commitment to and knowledge of the development of the whole child. As a middle school teacher, it is essential for candidates to possess a respect for and understanding of the developmental stage of 12-14 year olds. They should have experience practicing Positive Discipline techniques and guiding students in peaceful conflict resolution. Experience, certification, and/or interest in Montessori and other experiential education methods, outdoor education, and multi-age classrooms is essential. 

Preferred qualifications include:

Bachelor’s degree plus five years of teaching experience and at least three years of experience working with adolescents.
Master’s degree plus two years of teaching experience and at least three years of experience working with adolescents.
