Practical Life at Home and in the Classroom
Practical Life refers to the humble tasks of daily living. It can be as simple as inviting your child to dust the furniture with you, with a small cloth just his size, or as complicated as baking a pie.
In the prepared environments of Montessori classrooms, practical life may encompass several dozen lessons, each on a tray or basket with all the materials necessary for the child to fulfill the task or learning grace and courtesy.
At home, it can be helping mom or dad with specific chores with child-size implements. The main idea is for the child to develop coordination, concentration and independence, and to feel competent and a meaningful part of daily life.
